Written for the Damerey Fic Challege. Prompt: Memento
Faint sunlight filtered through the tiny window that sat above the bed, and though it wasn’t bright it was still enough to wake Poe Dameron from a restful sleep. He blinked a few times, slowly letting his eyes adjust, and as he did so he focused on the shelf directly across from the bed.
More than a dozen trinkets sat on the plain wooden shelf, the only decoration the simple room had. Poe eyed them and thought about where they had all come from. Rey had made it her mission to collect some kind of memento from every planet she visited. There was the tiny blue statue of a carrier butterfly from Meridun, a little purple gemstone from Teth, a small piece of glass created by lightning striking sand from Eadu. Every little bauble had a story of some sort, but as Poe eyed Rey’s stash, he suddenly realized something.
“Hey!” he said as he pushed himself up on his elbow.
“What?” came Rey’s startled response. He felt her sit up in the bed behind him. He looked at her over his shoulder and was momentarily distracted by her bare breasts. After glancing around and determining they weren’t in imminent danger, she started rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
“How come you don’t have anything from Yavin?” Poe asked her.
Her brow furrowed as her sleepy brain tried to catch up to his train of thought. She glanced at her mementos. “Oh, well, we weren’t there very long,” she said. “And we only visited your father’s house. We didn’t even go into town where I could buy anything.” She gave him a soft smile, then leaned into him. He was again distracted, this time by her breasts pressing against his bare shoulder. “Besides, I consider you my memento from Yavin.”
“Are you calling me a trinket?” he said, glaring at her.
She glared back. She hated when he called them trinkets.
“I have a better idea,” he said, moving to sit up straight. He grasped the chain around his neck and began to pull it over his head.
Rey’s eyes widened. “Poe,” she said softly as he began to fiddle with the clasp.
When it was finally undone, he pulled the ring free of the chain and held it up. “You can’t keep it on the shelf, though,” he told her. “If you want it, it’s gotta be on your finger.”
Rey took a deep breath and swallowed.
“Well?”
She nodded and Poe could see the moisture welling in her eyes. “Oh, yes!”
With a grin, Poe slid the ring onto her left hand, unsurprised when it fit perfectly. “We’ll do a formal ceremony when things settle down a bit more,” he told her.
Grinning back, Rey lifted up her hand. “Finn is going to be so jealous!”
“Humph!” Poe grunted. “It wouldn’t fit him, anyway.”
Laughing, Rey threw her arms around him, and suddenly those breasts were pressed against his chest. “I love you!”
“I love you, too, Sunshine.”
